Birth control pills and hair loss
Many girls and woman use some way of birth control. Most of them use birth control pills. As young as 14 years old, teenagers get hormones prescribed for many reasons, for example acne, pregnancy prevention and/or menstrual cramp
Most prescribed birth control pills
The most prescribed birth control pills are the pills containing a progestin called levonorgestrel and ethynyl-estradiol. It is possible when you experience excesive hair loss or female pattern baldness, that the current birth control pills you are using are the problem. Levonorgestrel is a progestin with a high androgenicity. This means that the progestin is capable producing the physiological reactions similar to androgens (for example testosterone and DHT). The more androgenic a hormone is, the more masculine effects it has on the body. Masculinic effects are for example a deeper voice, more body hair, facial hair and (fe)male pattern baldness. So it may be very possible this most prescribed pill is the cause of your hair loss.
The Mirena IUD
A Mirena IUD also contains levonorgestrel, since the Mirena IUD only contains Levonorgestrel and no estrogen, it’s possible it may be the problem for your hair loss. It’s important to draw bloods, to see if the IUD surpresses your natural estrogen production. Your doctor will tell you the Mirena IUD can’t surpress your natural hormone production, since it contains only a small amount of hormones, but the practical experience tells a different story. There are females experiencing hormonal surpression. This surpression leads to low estrogen production. A right amount of estrogen is needed for healthy hair. It’s recommended to draw bloods three months after getting a Mirena IUD, to check if your natural estrogen production is surpressed.
Alternative birth control pill
If you experience hair loss with the levonorgestrel with ethynyl estradiol combination pill, I recommend you to take a pills containing drospirenon with ethynyl estradiol (Yazmin pill). Diane 35 pill is also prescribed when a female experiences excssive hair loss, but I recommend the Yazmin pill, since it contains way less hormones.
Female pattern baldness
Female pattern baldness follows a different pattern then male pattern baldness. Females often experience hair thinning at the top of the head, sometimes at the temples. Most of the time, the thinning is due to the wrong hormones, low estrogen or even quitting the pill. When quitting the pill, you will have low estrogen as long as it takes untill your natural hormones have recovered.
